Segments The company operates through two segments, Front-end (wafer processing) and Back-end (assembly and packaging). Front-end This segment manufactures and sells equipment used in wafer processing, including the fabrication steps in which silicon wafers are layered with semiconductor devices. This segment is a product driven organizational unit consisted of manufacturing, service, and sales operations in Europe, the United States, Japan, Korea, Singapore and other countries in Asia. Back-end This segment manufactures and sells equipment and materials used in assembly and packaging, including the processes in which silicon wafers are separated into individual circuits and subsequently assembled, packaged and tested. This segment is organized in ASM Pacific Technology Ltd, in which the company holds a substantial share of 25.18% interest. This segment’s main operations are located in Hong Kong, the People’s Republic of China, Singapore, Malaysia and Germany. Products The company’s products include wafer processing deposition systems for chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, epitaxy, and diffusion/ furnace. The company makes two types of process tools, such as single-wafer and batch. The majority of the company’s business comes from single-wafer tools, which are designed to process an individual wafer in each processing chamber on the tool. The company works with its customers to meet their demands, and it has developed single wafer tools with multiple chambers configured together in a single platform. The company’s XP platform is a productivity common 300mm single-wafer platform that could be configured with approximately four process modules. The XP platform enables high-volume multi-chamber parallel processing or integration of sequential process steps on one platform. The company’s XP8 platform follows the basic architectural standards of the XP, but provides even higher productivity with approximately eight chambers integrated on a single-wafer platform with a small footprint.
