Anglo American Platinum Limited engages in the exploration, production, and sale of platinum group metals primarily in South Africa, North America, Asia, Europe, and internationally. The company operates as a subsidiary of Anglo South Africa Capital (Proprietary) Limited. The mining operations of Amplats consist of managed mines, joint venture mines and associate mines across South Africa and Zimbabwe. These mines extract ore from the Merensky and UG2 reefs, the Platreef and Main Sulphide Zone. The company invests in market development and beneficiation across four segments, such as global and local development of platinum jewelry markets; product development, commercialization and marketing activities for platinum – containing fuel cells; equity investments in early-stage industrial applications or technologies that use or enable the use of PGMs; and stimulating platinum investment demand through the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC). Joint Operations Modikwa Platinum Mine The company and ARM Mining Consortium Limited (ARMMC) established a 50:50 joint operation, known as the Modikwa Platinum Mine Joint Venture (Modikwa). Modikwa operates a mine and a processing plant on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex. Mototolo Platinum Mine The company and Glencore Kagiso Tiso Platinum Partnership have entered into a 50:50 joint operation. The Mototolo Mine, which is managed by Xstrata SA Proprietary Limited, is located on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex, while the processing plant is managed by the company. Kroondal Platinum Mine The company and Aquarius Platinum (South Africa) Proprietary Limited (Aquarius) have pooled certain mineral rights and infrastructure via a pooling-and-sharing agreement. The parties share 50:50 in the profits and losses from the jointly operated mine and processing plant located on the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex. History The company was incorporated in 1946. It was formerly known as Anglo Platinum Ltd. and changed its name to Anglo American Platinum Limited in 2011.
