Coal The company operates the Grootegeluk and Tshikondeni coal mines in Limpopo province, as well as the Leeuwpan, Inyanda, Arnot, Matla, North Block Complex, and New Clydesdale mines in Mpumalanga province located in South Africa, which collectively produce thermal, metallurgical, and coking coal. Mineral sands The company's South African mineral sands operations are housed in KZN Sands and the Western Cape operations of Namakwa Sands. In Australia, the company's interests are housed in Australia Sands whose principal asset is 50% of the Tiwest joint venture with Tronox Inc. In October 2008, the company acquired Namakwa Sands. The company also produces and sells mineral sands, such as titanium minerals, zircon, low manganese pig iron, and titanium dioxide feedstock. Base metals and Industrial Minerals The company operates the Rosh Pinah mine that produces zinc and lead concentrates; the Glen Douglas mine in Gauteng that produces metallurgical dolomite, aggregate, and lime; and a ferrosilicon plant, which manufactures gas-atomized ferrosilicon powder, as well as the Zincor refinery that produces zinc metal and sulphuric acid. Investments The company 20% interest in Sishen Iron Ore Company (Pty) Limited. It operates the Sishen and Thabazimbi mines, producing some 34Mtpa of lumpy and fine iron ore, two-thirds of which is exported.
