These businesses are carried on by the company’s U.K. ring-fenced bank (Barclays Bank UK PLC) and certain other entities within the company. Barclays International comprises the company’s Corporate and Investment Bank and Consumer, Cards and Payments businesses. These businesses are carried on by the company’s non ring-fenced bank (Barclays Bank PLC) and its subsidiaries, as well as by certain other entities within the company. Supervision and Regulation In the U.K., day-to-day regulation and supervision of the company is divided between the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) (a division of the Bank of England (BoE)) and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Barclays Bank PLC and Barclays Bank UK PLC are authorised credit institutions and subject to prudential supervision by the PRA and subject to conduct regulation and supervision by the FCA. The company is also subject to prudential supervision by the PRA on a group consolidated basis. Barclays Capital Securities Limited is authorised and supervised by the PRA as a PRA-designated investment firm and subject to conduct regulation and supervision by the FCA. Barclays Execution Services Limited is an appointed representative of Barclays Bank PLC, Barclays Bank UK PLC, and Clydesdale Financial Services Limited. The company is also subject to regulatory initiatives undertaken by the UK Payment Systems Regulator (PSR), as a participant in payment systems regulated by the PSR. Barclays Bank Ireland PLC is licensed as a credit institution by the Central Bank of Ireland (CBI) and is designated as a significant institution falling under direct supervision on a solo basis by the European Central Bank (ECB) for prudential purposes. In the U.S., Barclays US Consumer Bank is subject to the US Federal Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, which came into effect on 1 January 2020 (CCPA). In addition, the company is subject to the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which prohibits, among other things, corrupt payments to foreign government officials. History The company was founded in 1690. The company, formerly known as Barclay & Company Limited, was incorporated in England and Wales in 1896 under the Companies Acts 1862 to 1890. The company changed its name to Barclays Bank Limited in 1917 and was registered in 1982 as a public limited company under the Companies Acts 1948 to 1980. Further, the company changed its name to Barclays PLC in 1985.
