SSE plc engages in the generation, transmission, distribution, and supply of electricity. Segments SSEN Transmission This segment owns, operates and maintains the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland. This segment serves electricity generator, large electricity demand and ultimately various electricity customers across GB. SSEN Distribution This segment owns, operates and maintains the electricity distribution networks in the north of Scotland and central southern England. SSEN Distribution, operating under license as Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution plc and Southern Electric Power Distribution plc, is responsible for maintaining the electricity distribution networks supplying approximately 3.8 million homes and businesses across central southern England and north of the central belt of Scotland. This segment offers its services for the homes, businesses, generators and service providers that are connected to, or are seeking a connection to, its distribution networks and, ultimately, various electricity customers across GB. SSE Renewables This segment develops, constructs, owns and operates assets that generate electricity from renewable sources (wind and water). This segment offers services for electricity customers across the GB and Ireland markets. SSE Thermal This segment owns and operates conventional thermal generation and energy-from-waste facilities in the U.K. and Ireland. This segment serves electricity suppliers, traders and other generators through the energy market; national grid customers; and various electricity customers across GB. SSE Business Energy (GB) This segment provides a route to market for the output from the company’s Renewables and Thermal businesses and provides the sustainable energy services that customers seek. This segment serves a range of customers, from micro businesses to large corporations and public sector organizations in the GB market. SSE Enterprise This segment provides energy and utility services solutions for businesses and large public sector organizations. Gas Storage This segment owns and operates large underground caverns in which gas is stored for gas suppliers or traders and ultimately for various energy customers across GB. SSE Airtricity This segment provides energy and related services to households, businesses and public sector organizations across the island of Ireland for both home and business energy customers (including public sector bodies) across the island of Ireland. Energy Portfolio Management This segment delivers value adding energy trading services for business units in SSE and external customers for other SSE business units and third-party energy operators. Strategy The company’s strategy is to create value for shareholders and society in a sustainable way through successful development, efficient operation and responsible ownership of energy infrastructure and businesses. Disposals In January 2020, the company completed the disposal of its household energy and services business in Great Britain (‘SSE Energy Services’) to Ovo Group Limited. In March 2020, the company disposed of its subsidiary Slieve Divena Wind Farm No. 2 Limited. History SSE plc was incorporated in 1989. The company was formerly known as Scottish and Southern Energy plc and changed its name to SSE plc in September 2011.
