The Container segment handles container ships, such as loading and discharging of containers; transfers containers to other carriers, including rail, truck, feeder ship, or barge; operates three container terminals, including Hamburg – Altenwerder (CTA), Burchardkai (CTB) and Tollerort (CTT) – and another container terminal in Odessa, Ukraine (CTO); and provides maintenance and repair services. The Intermodal segment offers rail and truck network for seaport-hinterland traffic and continental traffic; inland terminals that provides a range of services for maritime logistics; transshipment services at the Port of Hamburg; and transports containers by road, both locally and over long-haul distances within Europe. The Logistics segment offers a range of contract and warehousing logistics, specialist handling, and consulting services. This segment’s services also comprise logistics services and process chains for the procurement and distribution of merchandise, such as the operation of handling facilities for dry bulk, motor vehicles, and fruit, as well as the processing of cruise ships. The company also provides consulting and management services for clients in the international port and transport industry. Some of these logistics services are provided together with partner companies. The Real Estate segment develops, lets in, and manages commercial and technical facility properties in the Port of Hamburg’s peripheral area. Customers The company’s customer base in the Container and Intermodal segment consists primarily of shipping companies and freight forwarders. The Logistics segment provides services to various customer groups, ranging from steel companies and power stations (in the field of bulk cargo handling) to international operators of ports and other logistics centers (in the field of port consulting). The Real Estate segment lets its office space and commercial premises to German and international customers from various sectors, ranging from logistics and trading companies to media, consulting and advertising agencies, fashion labels, hotel and restaurants, and the creative industries. Corporate Strategy The company’s strategy is aimed at assuming a primary position as a port logistics provider and thus achieving sustainable growth in its enterprise value. The key elements of the company’s strategy include establishing and improving quality and efficiency leadership; expanding the integrated service portfolio; and strengthening the regional port presence. Regulation In its business operations, the company is subject to various German and foreign statutory provisions and regulations, such as public law, trade, customs, labour, capital market and competition regulations. As the bulk of its commercial activities are concentrated in and around the Port of Hamburg, its regulatory environment is largely determined by the Hamburg Port Development Act (Hamburgisches Hafenentwicklungsgesetz – HafenEG). For the construction, alteration and operation of its handling facilities, the company is reliant on the issuance and continued existence of authorisations under public law, especially official authorisations in accordance with the German Federal Emissions Control Act (Bundesimmissionsschutzgesetz –BImSchG), the applicable local building regulations and water and waterways laws. History Hamburger Hafen und Logistik Aktiengesellschaft was founded in 1885. The company was formerly known as Hamburger Hafen- und Lagerhaus-AG and changed its name to Hamburger Hafen und Logistik Aktiengesellschaft in 2005.
